Just wasted four hours of my life trying to upgrade Windows XP to Windows 8.1 - lots of deeply unhelpful error messages about missing entry points in DLLs instead of telling me the real reason: only Windows 8.0 permits upgrade from XP. God I hate you Microsoft right now :(
